Wire Rope Components :

Wire

Wire is the smallest component of wire rope and forms the individual strands of the rope. Cables can be made from a variety of metallic materials including steel, iron, stainless steel, monel, and bronze. Cables can be produced in a variety of grades with regard to strength, wear resistance, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance and wire rope curves.

Strand

Strand of Wire Rope consists of two or more wires arranged and twisted in a specific arrangement. The individual strands are then laid out in a helical pattern around the core of the rope.

Strands made of larger diameter cables are more resistant to abrasion, while strands made of smaller diameter cables are more flexible.

Core

The core of the wire rope is the center of the rope and supports the strands and helps maintain their relative position under the stress of loading and bending. The core can be made from a number of different materials including natural or synthetic fibers and steel.

There are several types of Core or Core Wire Rope:

Selection of Wire Rope

Refer to GB8918-2006 “Wire Rope for Essential Purpose” and GB / T20018-2006 “General Purpose Wire Rope” on how to choose from different wire rope constructions. Please also refer to the section of our product catalog in choosing Wire Rope. We seugest select the same Wire Rope for general use. Technical parameters such as lift load, safety coefficient and lifting capacity of the lifting equipment should be taken into consideration when choosing a wire rope strength class. Do not carelessly choose high strength and high breaking strength Wire Rope, this can harm the results.

Wire Rope Installation

 
1.Unwinding: Put the pice of the rolled iron tube or the Wire Rope roll, then install the reel to the special carrier. Keep the Wire Rope parallel to the ground and tighten to release fatigue.

2. Arrangement of wire ropes on the reel: The selection of the lay direction of the wire rope depends on the direction of rotation of the reel, namely right lay wire rope with left rotating reel, left wire rope lay with right twist of coil. Roll the Wire Rope neatly onto the reel without the Wire Rope overlapping.

3. Cutting: for Wire Rope with relatively high residual tension, use soft iron wire to tie the rope 10-20mm from the point of cut. The length of the malleable iron wire should be 1 or 4 times the diameter of the rope. Then cut it with a cutting tool.

Steel wire rope maintenance and inspection

Operation: in operation, the wire rope must be in a stable speed, never overload, and never load the wire rope shock.

Treatment: lubricant is applied to the wire and wire rope strands during manufacture. This lubricant runs out while the rope is in use. And various dangerous meters will stick to the surface of the rope. This will cause abrasion between the wire rope and beam, and the rope to rust. It is important to clean and change the lubricant to the wire rope periodically.

Inspection notes: Before use, the condition of the wire rope, such as wear, wire breaks, corrosion, lubrication, deformation, joints, terminations and other problems, should be checked regularly with results recorded in accordance with relative specifications. Because wire rope slips for a long time, the reel and pulley will wear and crease which will cause the wire rope to be abrasive, deformed and a low life cycle, so it must be frequently inspected and maintained and replaced immediately if crimped components are found.

Contac between Wire Rope and Pulley Groove

The exact cantac between the pulley groove and the wire rope is shown in figure 2. If the pulley groove is too wide (figure 3), the wire rope and its metal core will be more susceptible to cable breaking due to fatigue. If the pulley groove is too narrow (figure 4), the wire rope will seriously wear out. The ratio between the radius of the pulley and the wire rope should be: R / d = 0.525 – 0.550.
